Clarks Wood Company has become the first Bristol business to work with Mencap in helping people with learning disabilities develop life-changing work-based skills.

We’re delighted to be working on a unique three-month project with Mencap, alongside Bristol City Council Learning Communities Team and the national APT Awards qualification organisation.

Since joining us as a yard assistant earlier this year, thirty-year-old Aaron Smith has developed key skills like teamwork, problem solving, time management and communication – as well as enjoying a huge increase in his personal confidence.

Aaron is working with his yard buddy Scott Greer to gain practical, hands-on work experience which will lead to an APT Certificate in Work Preparation, helping him move into the world of employment.

Bristol Mencap employment co-ordinator, Sandy Corke, said: “It’s hard to explain what it means to this special group of people to be welcomed with open arms into a business like this – Aaron has been treated as one of the Clarks Wood team and is thoroughly enjoying work each day. This sort of response can really be life changing for young adults like him.”

Clarks Wood is honoured to have Aaron as a part of our yard team – he is making a real contribution to our business, and his enthusiasm for his work is infectious. We hope this experience will make a positive difference to Aaron’s life, now and in the future.
