Environmental Information Sheet/2 2004 Issue
Softwood
We continue to negotiate with suppliers who have indicated that they are capable of supplying Softwood which comes from certified well managed forests. Recent developments indicate that there are now several options for supplying countries to choose from in order to achieve third party certification.
Primarily the main contenders for this verification of standards are the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Pan European Forest Certification Scheme (PEFC) and the Finnish Forest Certification Scheme (FFCS). Ultimately, through mutual recognition, all of these organisations should be able to demonstrate high forest management standards within a framework compatible with ISO14001 and EMAS.
Hardwood
Due to the inability of our shippers in Brazil to satisfy our demands for verifiable and traceable evidence of the legality of log sources we have no alternative but to suspend purchases of Mahogany from Brazil and concentrate our business in the sale of certified hardwood and timber products.
We continue to source Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified
hardwoods worldwide. These include exotic species of tropical hardwoods and
enable todays joinery manufacturers to have a wider choice of timbers which
meet the environmental standards they seek. Further details available on request.
We can offer FSC hardwoods from Belize (mahogany) Bolivia (Ipe, Curapay, Soto, Cuchi) South Africa (Karri) Malaysia (Meranti) and in due course expect many more species from a growing number of countries.
From North America we have an extensive range of certified hardwoods which include all of the popular species including Ash, White Oak, Red Oak, Cherry, Soft Maple, Tulipwood, Hard Maple and Yellow Birch.
Sheet Materials
Many new products are now entering the market now that sheet material producers have recognised the need to manufacture sheet materials which meet the FSC criteria.
We can offer Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) from all major UK manufacturers together with OSB and chipboard.
Plywood from tropical hardwood species in Brazil is now available from Gethal Amazonas, Eidai, and Cikel.
Traditional building products such as Softwood Shuttering Plywood are available from both North America and South Africa.
This wide and expanding selection will enable todays architects, specifiers, builders, specialist joiners, shopfitters and furniture manufacturers to choose timber from certified well managed forests with confidence.
